Focus on The Web

On the surface the Internet and the World Wide Web looks simple. You open a browser, enter an address, and a website appears. Behind that simple interaction many different technologies work together. Browsers, web servers, DNS, HTTP, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, cookies, certificates and many other components all play their part.

The Focus on The Web articles describe how these technologies work and how they fit together. Understanding what happens between you entering a URL and seeing a webpage makes it much easier to troubleshoot problems, improve performance, strengthen security and make better technical decisions.

These articles are not just step-by-step tutorials to configure a particular tool or service. Instead, each article focuses on a web technology, standard or concept and explains why it exists, its history, what problem it solves and how it works in practice. Where useful, I also look behind the abstractions that browsers, hosting platforms and content management systems normally hide from you.

The articles start with concepts that are useful for anyone working with websites. Then it gradually moves into more technical details for administrators and developers. The goal is not to know every web technology by heart. The goal is to understand the foundations well enough so that unfamiliar technologies become easier to understand, investigate and use.
