On 25 August 1991, Linus Torvalds posted his now famous "I'm doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won't be big and professional like gnu) for 386(486) AT clones." message in the newsgroup "comp.os.minix" on Usenet. And in September '91, version 0.0.1 was released.
