New in Joomla 6

20 October 2025

On Tuesday, October 14, 2025, Joomla 6 was released. What’s new in this version?

Joomla 6 is a major release focused on easier maintenance, better upgrade paths, stronger versioning, improved customization and useful developer enhancements. Joomla 6 makes websites easier to keep secure, easier to customize and more future-proof. Peter Martin discusses the key innovations and improvements in this release.

Automatic Core Updates

Joomla 6 introduces automatic core updates. This helps site owners keep their websites secure without having to manually install every Joomla update.

Smoother Upgrade Path

Joomla 6 can be upgraded directly from Joomla 5.4. The Backward Compatibility plugin helps older extensions continue working during the transition.

Cassiopeia Child Template

The default frontend template gets a child template, making it easier to customize colors, typography and layouts without directly changing the parent template.

Improved Versioning

Version history now includes custom field data. This gives site owners better rollback options and a more complete content history.

New Custom Fields

  • Notes field: Add internal notes or instructions between fields.
  • Numbers field: Better support for numeric values and currency formatting.

Better User Experience

CSS transitions have been added to both the frontend Cassiopeia template and the backend Atum administrator template, giving Joomla a smoother and more modern feel.

Developer Improvements

  • New HTML5 date and datetime fields.
  • TinyMCE 8 integration.
  • Cached language files for better performance.

Support Cycle

Joomla 6 comes with long-term support, including bug fixes until October 2028 and security fixes until October 2029.

Joomla 6 is not just a technical update. It is a practical release for site owners, administrators and developers who want safer updates, cleaner customization and a more reliable Joomla platform.
